Understanding Osteoarthritis

For osteoarthritis sufferers help can’t come soon enough.

We want to make sure people are able to make the best of their active years. Wait times are the enemy of patients with osteoarthritis. The longer patients wait for their surgery, the lower the chances of them returning to an active lifestyle.

Osteoarthritis is the progressive degradation of the surfaces of a joint. Previous injury, age, weight, and genetics can all contribute. This causes pain, reduced mobility, and lost quality of life. The incidence in Canada continues to rise with our aging population. It may be possible to temporize the symptoms for early osteoarthritis without surgery. However, for many, arthroplasty represents the best option to reclaim a good quality of life. The worsening crisis in Canadian surgical wait times often means that by the time patients get their joint replacement they can never reach their full potential for recovery. While patients wait for surgery their muscles atrophy, they acquire other injuries, and too often they permanently surrender their active lifestyles.

Our Services

For patients suffering advanced degeneration of the knee joint a total knee arthroplasty can be transformational. This surgery replaces the diseased surfaces of the joint with synthetic engineered components. We offer only premium components for maximum durability.

Knee Replacement Surgery

Hip replacement surgery or hip arthroplasty is the gold standard treatment for advanced osteoarthritis. We are proud to offer an anterior surgical approach to appropriate patients. This new approach avoids cutting muscles thereby minimizing recovery time. We use only premium arthroplasty components for maximum durability.

How we do what we do

Albertans that wish to have a private surgery experience must leave Alberta due to the provisions of the Canada Health Act.

We still want patients to have their care team close at hand before and after surgery. This is critical to ensure that patients are appropriately selected and prepared for surgery but also to ensure that they have their team available if they have trouble afterwards. It is simply not acceptable to have surgery and then be orphaned, miles away from the team you know and the very surgeon that knows exactly what they did. This is why we built an Alberta team for Alberta patients that travel together with you for surgery.

You will meet Dr. Henderson and make a plan together before you go anywhere. Also, you can have us do all your pre-operative investigations at home in Alberta. This allows us to create the best patient experience and still be the most cost effective private program in the country.

Vital has partnered with Westmount Square Surgical Centre in Montreal. We have chosen this as the premier high volume centre for private arthroplasty surgeries for our patients. Together with our surgical team you can be assured that you are recieving the highest quality care offered in Canada.

Cost of private joint replacement surgery

The costs of arthroplasty surgery are invariably high due to the specialized facilities, the costs of medical implants, and the size of the expert team required to deliver premier care. At Vital we are proud of what we have built and want to make this available to as many people as possible. Where possible we do try to control costs. What we will never do is compromise safety or quality. We are always completely transparent about costs and will respond openly to all questions. Please connect with us for up to date costing info that applies to your situation. Most Albertans that choose private surgery aren't wealthy. They are practical people that won’t accept years of suffering, lost active years, or just need to get better and get back to work.

We do have a financing partner that can create a plan that is accessible to most budgets.
